River Hills / Lake Wylie Lions conduct vision screenings of students using Welch Allyn Spot Vision Screeners, which detect refractive errors and vision misalignment quickly and easily. Vision screening is accomplished annually at schools in the Clover, York, and Rock Hill School Districts. When a student is identified with a particular ocular condition such as, but not limited to, myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism; the school nurse is advised to notify the parents that a comprehensive eye examination is recommended. This vision screening program is guided by the fact that 80% of a child’s learning and development requires healthy, corrected vision.
During the past year, over 14,000 students were screened by our volunteers, and over 2,000 of them were identified as needing a more complete eye exam.
